Implementations
1) Assess and monitor vitals (pain can affect vital signs, for example it can increase and change the depth of respirations if it is painful to breath)
2) Assess and record pain (Palliate/Provoke – what causes or comforts the pain, Quality of the pain – burning, stabbing, aching, etc., Region of the body- which part of the body is affected, is the pain radiating, Severity of pain – use of a 1-10 scale, Timing of pain- when does the pain occur, during meals, when breathing, and how long does it last)
3) Maintain bed rest with head of bed elevated to assist with breathing, at least 45 degrees (semi-fowler’s) or Fowler’s (90 degrees)
4) Provide comfort (Pillow’s, blankets, fan when experiencing fever, etc.)
5) Provide emotional support, patient may be feeling anxious, use therapeutic communication to insure they have someone they feel comfortable talking too, this will help with any assessments because they will be more willing to discuss how they are feeling with you
6) Provide a calm room environment to promote rest (patient is fatigued, tired, so they will need a quiet, dimly lit room to rest)
